Medical
Records:
In order to
maintain a healthy environment for your pet, we require
veterinarian certification that all of the required shots are
current. A current copy of vaccinations must be faxed to our
office before a reservation can be made and confirmed. According
to section 3.4 of SVRK Operating Instructions 34-01, the
following vaccinations are required for all animals using the
kennel:
For Dogs:
◦ Distemper
◦ Leptospirosis ◦ Parvovirus
◦ Para
influenza ◦ Hepatitis ◦
Bordetella*
◦
Adenovirus ◦ Rabies
◦ Corona**
* Bordetella (Kennel Cough) must be administered at least one
week (7 days) prior to boarding, allowing the shot to take
effect in the immune system. It is not necessary to wait until 7
days prior to boarding at the kennel to have your dog vaccinated
for Bordetella. If a dog has had the Bordetella vaccine in its
system for LESS THAN 7 days, the owner will be required to sign
a waiver releasing the kennel of responsibility in the event the
dog contracts Bordetella while staying in the kennel.
** The Corona virus vaccine is not required for boarding a dog
in the kennel. It is recommended for any dog living on the
island, however, due to the large number of stray dogs on the
island. This virus can be contracted through contact with the
feces of an infected dog.
For Cats:
◦
Rhinotracheitis ◦ Panleukopenia ◦ Calicivirus
◦
Chlamydophilia ◦ Feline Leukemia ◦ Rabies
Atlantic
Island Kennels reserves the right to deny boarding services to
any pet not having proof of required vaccinations. For your pets
protection, we require your pet to have proof of required
vaccinations. Failure to provide vaccination
records to kennel staff prior to arrival (to the island) will
result in a delay of the kennel’s acceptance of such pets.
Arrangements for after-hours arrivals are ONLY made for those
personnel who comply with our proof of vaccination requirements.
In the event the pet owner fails to comply with this
requirement, the next soonest available time the kennel will
accept the pet is the following business day. At that time,
kennel staff will physically review the records and if necessary
refer the pet and owner to the base vet clinic. Once required
vaccines have been administered, kennel staff will be more than
happy to check pets in. Depending on kennel occupancy, these
guests may be required to stay in our smaller indoor runs until
an indoor/outdoor run becomes available.
TLF on base
does not allow pets in the rooms, and there are no off base
boarding facilities. There are also no pet-friendly hotels off
base in the local community.
If the pet
owner is unable to make prior arrangements, it is the
responsibility of the pet owner (and their squadron) to make
accommodations until the kennel can accept the pet.
Medications:
Any medical
problems or special needs must be discussed with the kennel
staff. Medications requiring administration after normal
business hours will need to be administered by the owner or
authorized person. If the kennel staff administers medication
after normal business hours, a $2 fee will be charged for each
trip to the kennel.
Hours:
With
reservations you may drop off or pick up your pet Monday through
Friday from 0900-1230 and 1400-1730 hrs. Saturday drop off hours
are 0900-1130 hrs. Visiting hours are Mon-Fri 0900-1230 and
1400-1730, Saturdays 0900-1130. There are no visiting hours on
Saturday evenings, Sundays or Holidays. We close for normal
business on Sundays and holidays, but we never stop caring for
your pets during these days. Please understand that we do not
permit pick up or drop off of pets on Saturday evenings, Sundays
or holidays. Check out time is 12:00 noon.
Please Note:
Our staff
will always meet the needs of our incoming and departing PCS
guests with advanced notice of arrival. Please call ahead to
make arrangements if you are coming in after business hours.
Our storage
space in the facility is extremely limited. Normally, we are not
able to store carriers while our guests are PCSing IN or OUT.
Owners should plan on taking their carriers to their TLF rooms
while their animals are boarded at the kennel.
Unmanageable
Pets:
To ensure the
best care for an unmanageable pet, owners will be required to
assist the staff in the day-to-day maintenance of their pet.
Discounts will not be given if an owner takes care of their own
pet. Owners must clean, exercise, feed, and water no less than
twice a day.
Security:
Both a fire
and a security system have been installed for the protection of
your pets. A rear perimeter fence has been installed with barbed
wire to prevent unwanted guests. During non-business hours,
security cameras are recording.
Veterinary
Service:
In the event
that guests need veterinarian attention we will attempt to
contact the base veterinarian. The cost of the veterinarian
visit and transportation is the owner’s responsibility. If the
kennel provides transportation to the vet a $10 per trip fee
will be charged. If the animal belongs to family in the process
of PCSing, every effort will be made to contact the owner prior
to using veterinary services.
Vet care is
extremely limited on base, as well as on island. The Army vet
visits the island every few months. Appointments are limited,
and minor procedures sometimes involve a waiting list. There is
no emergency vet care available on base. The off base vets
usually see patients after 6PM, Monday through Friday.
Pet Grooming:
The groomer
is located in the kennel building, and appointments are
available by appointment. Appointments can be made through the
kennel reservation desk. We provide basic grooming services such
as bathing, nails, flea dips, trimming and cuts, anal glands,
ear cleaning, and dematting.
Prior to and
during boarding, staff members check pets for evidence of fleas.
If a problem exists, the pet will be dipped at the owners
expense. If your pet will be boarded for a long period of time,
they will be checked for fleas at least every two weeks. If your
pet has fleas, they will be dipped immediately, to prevent an
infestation.
To maintain
sanitation standards defined in the operating procedures,
animals boarded at the kennel may be bathed at the discretion of
the kennel staff.
If grooming
services are necessary during any animal’s stay at the kennel,
the owner will be responsible for all costs.
Kennel
Reservations:
Reservations
will be accepted Monday-Friday from 0900-1800 by telephone or
via e-mail. We encourage you to call ahead for reservations.
Incoming PCS personnel are encouraged to make arrangements 60-90
days prior to arrival date. We cannot be responsible for space
availability if prior arrangements are not made in advance.
Small dogs may be placed in an indoor kennel if an
indoor/outdoor kennel is not available. A current copy of
vaccinations must be faxed or e- mailed to our office before the
reservation is considered confirmed.
Vacationers
are encouraged to contact the kennel as far in advance as
possible. The kennel has limited space, and PCSers always take
priority when it comes to guaranteeing kennel space. Summer
months and holidays are particularly busy at the kennel.
Reservations
require a $25.00 deposit paid at time the reservation is made.
Deposits are refunded if the space is utilized as reserved, and
the key is returned. If notification of non-intent to use is
accomplished 48 hours prior to the reservation arrival date, the
kennel staff will issue a refund. The deposit will be credited
to the total boarding cost at check out. Please understand that
a reservation is not confirmed until the kennel has received and
approved a copy of vaccination records and the $25.00 deposit.

microchip are the main importation requirements. The
requirements can and do change periodically. For the most
accurate information, contact the Portuguese Consulate nearest
you.

The vaccines required to import a pet into Portugal are
different than the vaccines required to use the kennel.
The Portuguese only require a rabies vaccine to import a pet.
As of October 2004, these were the necessary importation
requirements:
◦ Microchip (Home Again or AVID Eurochip)
◦ Bilingual European Union Health Certificate (in Portuguese)
This certificate must be endorsed by a USDA veterinarian, and is
good for 120 days once signed, or until the rabies expires,
whichever happens first. There are fees involved.
◦ Link to official EU website for
obtaining bilingual EU health certificate:
http://europa.eu.int/comm/food/animal/liveanimals/pets/nocomm_third_en.htm
The certificate is available in both PDF
and Word format in all 11 standard EU languages. The Word forms
can be typed on the computer and will fit front and back on one
page including instructions.
This site also has the regulation and is
where any new changes to the requirements will be posted. The
APHIS site only has the forms in PDF format. The PDF format is
three pages with the third page being instructions and unless
you have the full Adobe program you cannot enter the information
on the computer.
◦ A USDA veterinarian must then endorse the health certificate.
USDA Area Offices can be located at
http://www.aphis.usda.gov/vs/area_offices.htm
Endorsement costs $24.00 and the check should be made out to
“USDA Veterinary Services”. A copy of the rabies certificate
(and rabies titer results, if required) must be mailed in with
the health certificate. Allow enough time for mailing back and
forth.
◦ Some airlines require 10 day old health certificate to carry
an animal.
